I remember how fascinating and sometimes overwhelming Ayurveda can feel when you first discover it. There are new words in Sanscrit everywhere: Vata, Pitta, Kapha, Agni, Prakriti, Ama, Doshas. And then there are thousands of years of philosophy, herbs, food, daily routines and lifestyle practices to explore. Over the years, I've built quite a collection of Ayurveda books. Some are easy to pick up and read with a cup of tea, while others are books I return to again and again when I want to understand something in more depth.
I'm a bit of a bookworm, so I began reading everything I could find about Ayurveda and holistic health. London's public libraries quickly became my best friends! They provide an amazing service that allows you to borrow books from different libraries across the city. You can often get these books for free if they are available, or you may pay a small fee to have them brought from other libraries. You can also get free access e-books and audiobooks through various library apps using your library card. My favourite is the Barbican Library, which has a fantastic section dedicated to holistic health, natural medicine and wellbeing. I have found some real gems there, and it's a great place to start if you're curious about Ayurveda but don't want to spend a fortune building your own collection. My first ever Ayurveda book was "Geta Vata Ayurveda: A Practical Guide to Optimal Health, Healing, and Vitality." The author writes so wonderfully that you can quickly understand the basic concepts and feel inspired to learn more. I am currently reading her second book "Rasayana: Feel Young in Mind and Body with the Wisdom of Ayurveda" and loving it! I highly recommend both books.

But, where should you start? Ayurveda is a huge subject, so I've divided my favourite books into three simple categories: learn the foundations, bring Ayurveda into your everyday life, and discover Ayurvedic cooking. Whether you want to understand your dosha, create a healthier daily routine or simply learn how to cook in an Ayurvedic way, there is a book here for you. Here are 10 of my favourites Ayurvedic books for begginers:

I have read and enjoyed all of the books I’ve recommended here. Most were borrowed from my local library, while a few have earned a permanent place on my bookshelf because I return to them time and time again. I’m now exploring more books on Ayurvedic cooking and recipes, as I love discovering new ways to bring Ayurvedic principles into everyday meals. Do you have a favourite Ayurvedic cookbook or a book you return to again and again? I’d love to hear your recommendations. Please share them with me. I’m always looking for my next good read!
With love,
